N.A.M.A MEDICAL SCREENING FOR FOOD AND DRINK HANDLERS

The food vendors screening exercise which was conducted in the Nsawam-Adoagyiri Municipal Assembly, Eastern Region, which aim was to help all food vendors in the municipality assess health care and know their health status. The exercise curved a total number of 6,525 food /drink vendors in the municipality, out of which 62% of them were between the ages of 14-33, 25% between the ages of 34-53, 10% between 54-73 and 3% 74 years and above. Females recorded the higher percentage of 92% and the remaining 8% were males. Widal (typhoid) was one of the test that was carried out during the exercise and the medical team recorded a high percentage of 8% as positive and the remaining 92% negative for the entire Municipality. But individually, some communities such as Tankas Office (Sanitation), Ankwa Dobro, Methodist church, Adoagyiri, Nsawam Market, Main Lorry Station, Nsawam Hospital and Sakyikrom recorded high rate of typhoid infection cases. With the hepatitis B status of the people, 2% tested positive and 98% tested negative in the Municipality. Meanwhile, communities like Tankas Office (Sanitation), Ankwa Dobro, Methodist Church, Sakyikrom, Duayeden, Main Lorry Station, Nsawam Hospital and Nsawam Market recorded high rate of Hepatitis B infection cases. However, Tankas Office (Sanitation) recorded the highest number of food and drink handlers with a high rate of Typhoid and hepatitis B infection respectively. Tankas Office (Sanitation) recorded the highest rate of hypertension (high blood pressure) in the entire Municipality whereas most of the communities also recorded some few cases. Again, Tankas Office (Sanitation) recorded the highest rate of hypotension (low blood pressure) whereas most of the communities had no single case of hypotension recorded. A large number of food and drink handlers in the entire Municipality were found not to have suffered from diarrhea, skin lesions, boil, septic finger and discharge from eye/ear/gums/mouth. However, the total of about 0.9% of the entire population of food and drink handlers in the Municipality were found with a recurring bowel disorder when their history and physical examinations were taken by the medical team.
