On June 13th, 2024, the Department of Social Welfare and Community Development of the Nsawam Adoagyiri Municipal Assembly took a significant step in supporting the local disability community by holding an informative workshop for the Ghana Society of Persons with Disability and the Ghana National Association of the Deaf. The workshop was aimed to empower and educate members on key issues affecting persons with disabilities.
The session covered three critical topics designed to enhance understanding and improve support structures for individuals with disabilities.
First on the agenda was an overview of the Persons with Disability Act, 2006, Act 715. This legislation is crucial as it outlines the rights and protections for persons with disabilities in Ghana, ensuring they receive equal treatment and opportunities in various aspects of life.
Next, the discussion turned to the Guidelines for the Disbursement of the Disability Fund. This fund is essential for providing financial support and resources to individuals and organizations working to improve the quality of life for persons with disabilities. Attendees learned about the procedures for applying for and managing these funds, aiming to make the process more transparent and accessible.
Finally, the workshop focused on “Strengthening and Revitalizing Organized PWD Associations through Effective Leadership and Elections.” This segment aimed to bolster the effectiveness of local disability associations by emphasizing the importance of strong leadership and democratic processes within their organizations. The goal was to ensure that these associations can operate more effectively and represent the needs of their members better.
Throughout the workshop, participants engaged in lively discussions and shared their experiences, reflecting a deep commitment to improving the lives of persons with disabilities in the community. The event provided valuable insights and practical information, equipping attendees with the knowledge they need to advocate for their rights and manage their organizations more effectively.
By the end of the day, members left with a renewed sense of purpose and a clearer understanding of the resources available to them. The Department of Social Welfare and Community Development expressed its commitment to continuing support for disability organizations and looks forward to more collaborative efforts to enhance the well-being and empowerment of persons with disabilities in Nsawam Adoagyiri.
