Coronavirus, according to WHO is a large family of viruses that cause illness ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS-CoV) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS-CoV).
It is spread through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Some common signs of the infection includes respiratory symptoms, fever, cough, shortness of breath and breathing difficulties. Extreme cases of the infection also includes pneumonia, severe acute respiratory syndrome, kidney failure and even death.
Standard recommendations to prevent infection spread include regular hand washing, covering mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing, thoroughly cooking meat and eggs. Avoid close contact with anyone showing symptoms of respiratory illness such as coughing and sneezing.
Some countries in Africa have recorded a case or two of the virus, of which Ghana is a part. On Thursday,12th March, 2020, Ghana recorded her first case of the deadly coronavirus which was announced by the Health Minister Kwasi Agyemang-Manu. The two cases tested positive after laboratory tests from the Noguchi Memorial Institute of Medical Research.
For now, Ghanaians have been urged to abide by the precautions to prevent contracting the virus such as avoiding crowded places and suspending handshakes. And adapt to regular handwashing and the usage of hand sanitizers to avoid the transmission of COVID-19.
The 63rd Independence Day was held at the Nsawam Prisons Park. The works department of the Nsawam Adoagyiri Municipal has resumed the street-naming exercise in parts of the municipality. The team erected the street-name signages at some areas which were not covered in the previous exercise.
