The Department of Social Welfare and Community Development of the Nsawam Adoagyiri Municipal Assembly has joined the global community to commemorate the International Day of the Girl Child with an inspiring event aimed at empowering young girls and promoting their rights, health and education.
Held at the Municipal Assembly Hall, the programme brought together schoolgirls, teachers, parents and stakeholders from key institutions to discuss ways of supporting the holistic development of the girl child.
The Acting Municipal Director of Social Welfare, Miss Nana Frempomaa Oduro, in her opening address, emphasized the department’s commitment to ensuring that girls within the municipality are given equal opportunities to learn, grow and lead. She encouraged parents and community leaders to serve as role models and advocates for girl empowerment, noting that the success of the next generation depends on how today’s girls are nurtured and protected.
Among the dignitaries present was Her Worship Juliana S. P. Mensah, Magistrate of the Nsawam District Court, who delivered a powerful message on discipline, education and resilience. She urged the girls to stay focused on their studies, avoid early relationships, and make choices that would shape a brighter future.
Other speakers included Mrs. Asare-Awuku Jacqueline from the Ghana Health Directorate, who led an engaging session on breast cancer awareness and personal hygiene, and Mr. Augustine Lord Mansfield Ocran from the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU), who educated participants on gender-based violence and reporting channels available for victims.
Mrs. Irene Nuekie Ayihi, representing the Ghana Education Service, also encouraged teachers to provide mentorship and guidance for girls, while Mr. Bernard Vasco from the Agriculture Department called for collective responsibility in ensuring safe learning environments.
The celebration concluded with an interactive dialogue session, during which students expressed gratitude for the lessons shared and pledged to be ambassadors of positive change in their schools and communities.
The event not only inspired confidence and awareness among participants but also reaffirmed the Nsawam Adoagyiri Municipal Assembly’s dedication to promoting equality, education and empowerment for girls across the municipality.
