The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Nsawam Adoagyiri, Hon. Philibert Fummey Amenorpe, on Thursday engaged Okada riders, members of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), and market leaders to discuss issues relating to motorcycle operations, road safety and regulatory compliance within the municipality.
The meeting, brought together key stakeholders including the Municipal Coordinating Director and the District Police Commander. The discussions centered on the growing concerns surrounding commercial motorcycle operations and the need to ensure safety and order on the roads.
In his remarks, Hon. Amenorpe reiterated that the operation of commercial motorcycles (Okada) remains unregulated under the laws of Ghana. He cautioned that no individual or group has the authority to regulate or sanction Okada operations outside the provisions of the law until such time that national legislation permits their formal recognition.
He further advised riders to comply with traffic regulations, wear helmets and exercise caution while on the road to protect their lives and those of other commuters.
“Safety on our roads is a shared responsibility. Riders must respect traffic laws, wear helmets, and ride responsibly to safeguard themselves and other road users,” he emphasized.
The engagement provided a platform for open dialogue, where participants shared their challenges and offered suggestions toward improving transport discipline within the municipality. Stakeholders reaffirmed their commitment to cooperate with the Assembly and law enforcement agencies to promote safety, discipline and mutual respect among transport operators.
The meeting concluded with a renewed pledge by all parties to work together in ensuring safer and more organized transport operations across the Nsawam Adoagyiri Municipality.
